Set uphill just off of Rotterdam Junction in Schenectady, New York is the Hungry Chicken Country Store. Louise Dickinson says they patterned their store after a popular country store in Vermont. She wanted it to have a little bit of everything, which it certainly does!
From home grown and locally made jams, jellies, chutneys, pickles and candles to baked goods, soft ice cream, soaps, and local products, Hungry Chicken Country Store has it all! Opened in 2017 and located just west of Schenectady adjacent to the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail, the country store sees daily customers stopping in for fresh made breakfasts or to stock up on delicious candied jalapeños, apple cider vinegar, and other seasonal favorites.
Louise says “We were total neophytes when we began. Our original expectations were small – coffee and snacks. Shortly after we opened, someone suggested we do breakfast sandwiches, a soft introduction into what has become primarily a busy retail food business with the added advantage of ‘destination’ status. We get a lot of visitors from outside the area, which has continued to surprise and delight us. Having the bike path and Mohawk River outside our front door helps too!”
The Hungry Chicken Country Store has been a customer with Burch since before they even opened their doors in 2017. She mentions that “we could not have expanded our product lines as quickly without the help of Burch.” Louise makes the trip up to Queensbury a few times a year to pick up locally from Burch’s warehouse, where she orders colonial and hexagonal jars for jams and candles and marasca bottles for apple cider vinegar.
