Glass Droppers, Dispensing Pumps, and Sprayers: How to Choose the Right Dispensing Cap

Glass Droppers, Dispensing Pumps, and Sprayers: How to Choose the Right Dispensing Cap

Picking the right bottle is often the first step of the packaging decision, but the cap you choose is just as important! Which dispensing cap you pick can affect how customers use your product, how much they can dispense at once, how well the formula is protected, and even how your brand is perceived.

For cosmetics brands, essential oil producers, tincture makers, CBD brands, and more, these dispensing formats are especially common: glass droppers, dispensing pumps, and sprayers. Choosing the right one depends on your product's viscosity, application, dosage requirements, packaging goals, and customer experience.

At Burch, we help customers evaluate packaging as a complete system, from bottle to cap and liner. Here's how to determine which dispensing format makes the most sense for your product.

2oz Glass Dropper

Glass Droppers

Glass droppers are a popular choice for products where controlled dispensing and a premium presentation are priorities. A dropper typically combines a pipette with a squeeze bulb, allowing the customer to draw product from the bottle and dispense it in small quantities.

This makes glass dropper bottles particularly well suited to essential oils, serums, facial oils, tinctures, and other products where customers need to dispense a small, controlled amount at a time.

Instead of pouring a product from the bottle, users can release individual drops or even a measured amount. That can be especially useful for concentrated formulations. Some of our droppers have ml markings on the glass pipette for more precise use. Also consider a dropper with a bent tip, which allows consumers to more easily use all the product inside the bottle.

Droppers are an ideal choice if your product is relatively low in viscosity, is meant to be dispensed in small quantities, and often requires controlled application.

White Lotion Pump

Dispensing Pumps

Dispensing pumps are designed for quick, controlled dispensing with minimal mess. Consumers press the pump actuator, releasing a portion of product through the nozzle.

Pumps are particularly useful for cosmetics and personal-care products such as lotions, creams, liquid soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and serums. They can also work well for other formulas where customers might want consistent, repeatable dispensing.

One major benefit of pump caps is usability. A pump can be operated with one hand and generally keeps the user's hands away from the remaining product inside the container. Pumps are often more practical than droppers, especially for viscous lotions or creams that may not flow efficiently through a traditional dropper.

However, pump selection should be carefully considered based on its compatibility with the product's viscosity and dispensing characteristics. The output rate (the amount released with each pump) can also influence the customer experience. Contact our customer service department to request samples to test with your product!

Black Fine Mist Sprayer

Sprayers

Sprayers are designed to distribute liquid across a surface rather than dispense a concentrated stream or individual drops. Depending on the sprayer, the output can range from a fine mist to a more targeted spray

Sprayers are usually a natural choice for products such as body mists, facial sprays, hair products, room fragrances, cleaning solutions, and other formulations intended for broad and even application.

For cosmetics brands, a fine-mist sprayer can create a lightweight application experience that reinforces a premium product's positioning. Sprayers can also be useful when the customer needs to cover a relatively large area quickly. Rather than repeatedly squeezing a dropper or pressing a pump, a sprayer distributes product over the intended surface.

The key consideration is the spray pattern. A fine mist, standard spray, and more targeted actuator can produce very different results. Formula viscosity, nozzle design, and intended application all need to be considered together.

To choose a cap, narrow down your options by starting with how the customer is intended to use the product. Consider your product’s viscosity and application to determine which is best, or request samples from Burch to test which produces the best result.

Don’t treat the closure as an afterthought when selecting your preferred bottle. The bottle and dispensing system should be working together seamlessly. Neck finish, closure size, product viscosity, dip-tube length, output rate, seal requirements, and material compatibility can all affect whether a packaging combination performs as expected.

At Burch, our goal is to help customers find packaging that works for their product from start to finish. Whether you're launching a new tincture, expanding an essential oil line, developing a cosmetic serum, or packaging a CBD product, the right dispensing format can improve both functionality and the customer experience.
